Cardiovascular conditions we treat
Within the Heart and Lung Centre, our cardiology department treats a broad spectrum of conditions affecting the heart and blood vessels.

What is cardiovascular disease?
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a general term for any disease that affects the heart or blood vessels. Common conditions of this nature include coronary heart disease, heart failure and heart valve disease.
Our consultant cardiologists provide a wide range of minimally invasive treatments for cardiovascular conditions. We also provide cardiac surgery for patients that require greater intervention.
Cardiovascular conditions we treat
At the Heart and Lung Centre, our consultant cardiologists treat a diverse range of conditions affecting the heart and blood vessels.
Angina
Angina is a type of chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to your heart. It’s often triggered by stress or physical exertion.
Aortic stenosis
Aortic stenosis is a type of heart valve disease where a narrowing of the aortic valve opening restricts blood flow.
Arrhythmia
An arrhythmia is an abnormal heartbeat, meaning it may beat too quickly, too slowly or in an irregular fashion.
Atherosclerosis
Atherosclerosis refers to the thickening or hardening of the arteries caused by a build-up of plaque.
Atrial fibrillation
Atrial fibrillation is a common type of arrhythmia, where the heart beats irregularly and sometimes faster than normal.
Bradycardia
Bradycardia is a type of arrythmia where the heart beats slower than normal, causing symptoms like dizziness.
Cancer
Our specialist cardio-oncologists help those receiving cancer treatment with the management of heart-related side effects.
Cardiomyopathy
Cardiomyopathy is a disease of the heart muscle, which makes it more difficult for your heart to pump blood through the body.
Congenital heart disease
Congenital heart disease is present from birth and affects the function and structure of the heart.
Coronary heart disease
Coronary heart disease (CHD) occurs when the coronary arteries become narrowed by a build-up of fatty deposits.
Diabetes
Diabetes is when your blood sugar levels become too high, leading to serious health problems if left untreated.
Fainting and dizziness
Fainting (syncope) and dizziness are common side effects of many heart conditions, such as arrhythmias.
Heart attack
A heart attack is a life-threatening condition where blood flow to the heart becomes blocked, usually by a clot.
Heart failure
Heart failure is when the heart fails to pump blood around the body properly. It tends to occur when the heart becomes weak.
Heart murmurs
A heart murmur is an abnormal heartbeat sound that occurs when blood doesn’t flow smoothly through the heart.
Heart palpitations
Heart palpitations are noticeable heartbeats that can feel fluttering, irregular or like you’ve skipped a beat.
Heart valve disease
Heart valve disease occurs when one or more of the heart valves becomes damaged, affecting blood flow through the heart.
High blood pressure
High blood pressure (hypertension) is when the pressure of blood in your arteries is consistently too high.
High cholesterol
High cholesterol is when you have raised levels of cholesterol in your blood, which can cause a heart attack or stroke.
Myocarditis
Myocarditis is an inflammation of the heart muscle, which can reduce the heart’s ability to blood.
Pericarditis
Pericarditis is an inflammation of the tissue surrounding the heart (pericardium) that often leads to chest pain.
Ventricular fibrillation
Ventricular fibrillation is a serious type of heart arrhythmia that requires emergency treat to prevent cardiac arrest.
Ventricular tachycardia
Ventricular tachycardia is a type of arrhythmia that occurs within the lower chambers of the heart (ventricles).
